很多人在美國讀書，獎學金都是來自美國的能源部 DOE。
印象中，是在美國讀書時，碩士論文指導教授張國龍老師有一年也來美國訪問，在一次聚會時老師提到，二戰後美國意識到未來是能源的戰爭，因此成立 DOE ，原本是要取名 Dept of energy and weapon。後來飽受各方指責，不得已把 weapon 拿掉。
以前資料很難查，有了 google 還是查不到武器這個字眼是否曾經出現在DOE，不過，他們的任務宗旨就很明顯提到
The mission of the Energy Department is to ensure America’s security and prosperity by addressing its energy, environmental and nuclear challenges through transformative science and technology solutions.
完全沒有避諱，DOE 就是曼哈頓計劃的延伸，是世界第一次認識理論物理學家驚人的破壞力之後，舉全國之力，努力完成山姆大叔「保護世界和平」的天命。
至於這樣的發展會不會治絲益棼，就需要人類更高的智慧才能參透。
